Finished Size: 16” x 36”Construction: All seam allowances are 1/4”.
- Cut each of the 34 charm squares into two pieces each 2 1/2” x 5” for a total of 68 “pavers”.
- Choose 8 of the 2 1/2” x 5” rectangles to become the “dead-ends” for your street. (The short pieces at the ends of every other strip)
- Cut the 8 selected rectangles into eight 2 1/2” x 2 3/4” rectangles. (Discard the remaining 2 1/2” x 2 1/4” pieces to avoid confusion when assembling the runner.)
- Arrange (60) 2 1/2” x 5” rectangles and the (8) 2 1/2” x 2 3/4” rectangles in 8 rows as shown in the diagram above. Rows #2, 4, 6, and 8 will have (8) 2 1/2” x 5” paver rectangles. Rows #1, 3, 5, and 7 will have (7) 2 1/2” x 5” pavers plus a 2 1/2” x 2 3/4” dead-end on each end of the row.
- Sew the rectangles together end-to-end to form 8 rows.
- This runner will now be quilted as you sew the rows together.
- To prepare for quilting, lay the batting on the table. Layer the backing right sides up on top of the batting. Baste layers together using basting spray to create a “quilt sandwich”.
- Turn the quilt sandwich over so that the batting is on top. Draw a line down the length of the center of the batting using a marking pen.
- Lay Row 4 right sides up on top the batting, aligning the right side of Row 4 with the line drawn on the batting.
- Layer Row 5 right sides together with Row 4. Sew Row 4 and 5 together, sewing through the batting and backing as you sew the seam. Sewing with a walking foot will help to ease the layers of fabric and batting, preventing any “bumps in your road.” Press seam towards Row 5, smoothing the row out on the batting.
- Layer Row 6 right sides together with Row 5. Sew. Press seam towards Row 6.
- Repeat process with Rows 7 and 8.
- Begin process for remaining half of runner, sewing Row 3 to 4. Sew Row 2 to 3, then Row 1 to 2.
- Trim batting and backing even with the edges of the runner.
- Binding: Cut three strips 2 1/2” by the width of the fabric. Join the three strips together end to end. Fold strip in half lengthwise, press. Attach binding to runner, mitering corners.
A Charm Pack consists of 5" squares and represents a complete collection of
fabric - one square for each fabric in the collection. A Charm Pack can be
as little as fifteen squares or as many as forty or more. There are many
patterns in which to use these very convenient squares. But they can also
be used "as is" for quick and very scrappy quilts ranging from crib size all
the way to a king. The following shows how many squares you will need for
different size quilts.
- Crib 27" x 54" 72 squares - 6 across and 12 down
- Lap 45" x 63", 140 squares - 10 across and 14 down
- Twin 67 1/2" x 99", 330 squares - 15 across and 22 down
- Double 81" x 99", 396 squares - 18 across and 22 down
- Queen 90" x 103 1/2", 460 squares - 20 across and 23 down
- King 108" x 108", 576 squares - 24 across and 24 down
Each Charm Pack lists how many squares are included. Purchase the number
of packs that will get you the number of squares needed for the size quilt
you want to make. The best part of using Charm Packs for patch quilts is
that you can start sewing right away! Arrange one pack in a pleasing manner
and then simply repeat. Reduce the number of packs needed by adding a border
or two. And patched quilts look great tacked so you can eliminate hand or
machine quilting if you like!
Charm Packs are like appetizers - they give you a little taste
of what the fabric line is like. If unsure of colors or patterns
in a fabric line, buy a Charm Pack!
The holidays seemed to just fly by…………. Thanks to all that helped and attended
the potluck/meeting in December!! Just wanted to wish all of you a healthy and
happy new year 2009!! Enjoy each and every day to the fullest!!
