A LITTLE ABOUT ME
~ AND ~
QUILTING

Karen Shaw
My mother has been quilting for over twenty years and I always thought everything she did was beautiful. Two years ago she asked if I would like to join her at the first meeting of the year. I reluctantly agreed and by the end of the meeting she had me signed up for every challenge, secret pal, refreshments and raffle. I signed up at the end of the meeting and had a wonderful time that first year. I was able to go to some of the shops in the MA Shop Hop and really started to get into quilting.

The following year I excitedly joined looking forward to each meeting and the challenges I signed up for. I have now completed two quilts and have three tops finished waiting to be quilted. Two of which I designed myself.

I have enjoyed myself so much in the last two years that I let my Mom talk me into being this years president and lead for the 2009 GHQG Quilt Show. I am sure I am going to have a splendid time. I am truly looking forward to a great year with each of you.

THANK YOU - THANK YOU!!!!

A big THANK YOU again goes out to all who helped with the Quilts Of Valor, and those who attended the presentation to Army Specialist Glen Galbraith. He and his family were honored in such a special way with all your interest in his experience and sacrifice. ~ Cyndy

Keep yourself in great quilting shape!

Quilting is a great way to spend your time, but we all know what a toll it can take on your hands, neck, back, etc. A good balance is key to keeping yourself in great quilting shape! Here are some tips to help you achieve that balance.

Keep your workstation ergonomic- A lot of quilters have their machines on a table that is too tall. In doing this you cause strain to your arms, wrists and back. It's very important that your chair and table be the right height for your body. As you sit, your feet should be flat on the floor and your legs should form a right angle. Make sure your chair has lumbar support to help your lower back or buy a pillow made to help with this problem.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome- A big problem in the quilting/sewing world, anyone who has suffered from this can tell you what a real pain this malady can be! Also, if you don't address this problem, surgery may be your only relief. Help prevent this by varying your hand quilting techniques, taking rest breaks often, using good posture and keeping your workstation ergonomic.

Back pain- Sitting, especially for long periods of time, puts enormous strain on your back. Help keep your back in shape by taking frequent breaks and avoid the marathon sessions at your sewing machine. Shift your weight by getting up and moving about. Try to keep a good posture and stretch that spine. If standing for long periods of time, elevate one foot 6 inches higher than the other on a stool or box. Switch feet after a period of time.

Eye strain- If you have glasses wear them or use your magnifying "cheaters" for stitching. Vanity is not allowed when it comes to getting your stitches correct! Also, the right lighting is key to help prevent eye strain. Did you know that the amount of light you need to help prevent eye strain increases as we get older? Check with your eye doctor to find out how much. Give your eyes a break, after a short time focus on something outside or across the room.

Get plenty of exercise, rest and good nutrition- What more can be said about this? When you have these things balanced in your life, the rest just falls into place.

TAKE CARE OF YOU!!!

OTHER NEWS

We will have a new visitor to the next meeting, Lettie, of Enfield. Lettie has transportation for the October meeting, but may need a ride to future meetings. If you can assist, please she Cyndy at a meeting, or call her at 749-5215. Lettie lives on Prospect Street in Enfield.

We still haven't found Maureen MacDonald's Nine-Patch box. Her box is a yellow cardboard shoebox with ribbons attached to keep it closed. Please recheck your sewing area again and make sure her box isn't under some unfinished projects.

We have ten people signed up for the nine patch shoebox exchange. Please bring your shoebox with four starter nine patch blocks and instructions to the October 15th meeting. The boxes will get labels and start traveling at the October meeting.

If you signed up for the fabric swap, you need to bring twelve 10 inch squares of leaf fabric. The first block of the month is Stick Pinwheel.

There will be one more month for sign ups for the paint chip challenge. Sign up at the October 15th meeting. I will give out your paint chips at the November meeting. Challenges are due at the June 2009 meeting.

If you have any questions, please call me at 860-413-9335
Thanks, Christine Goldschmidt
