Sewing Machine Needle Chart

Ball Point 70-90 Has a rounded point. 70 for lingerie, nylon, jersey; 80 for T-shirt; 90 for sweatshirt fleece.

Stretch 70-90 A stretch needle has a more rounded point and a blue anti-cling coating which helps to prevent skipped stitches in knits and elastic. Sometimes used on Ultra suede, vinyl, and plastic.

Universal 60-90 A compromise between a sharp and a ballpoint needle; can be used on both wovens and knits.
60. very fine batiste
70. broadcloth
80. trigger and gabardine
90. denim and twill

Jeans 70-90 Has a sharp point and a shaft that is less prone to flex. The sharpness of the needles makes it better for use on denim and woven fabrics where a clean stitch is desired.

Microtex/Sharp 60-90 A sharp point with a thin shaft. 60-90 corresponds to the weight of the fabric; as the fabric gets heavier or denser, the number is higher.

Micro Fiber Assorted Specially designed for micro fiber fabrics. The thin, tapered point of this needle causes less damage to fabric.

Quilting Topstitch 80-90 A sharp point with a large eye and deep groove. Use with heavier fabrics. The large groove cradles heavy threads.

Embroidery 75-90 Sharp needle with a large eye and groove; also has a coating and and larger scarf. For use with embroidery thread. Prevents shredding of rayon or metallic threads. Two threads may be used through the eye of an 80-90 needle.

Leather 80-90 Point is sharp cutting wedge. Used for leather only. Not for vinyl or simulated leathers.

Tips

  1. Ever get those free internet program DVD's in the mail? They make a perfect template for yo-yo's!

  2. I was in the fish section of our supermarket and noticed a stack of clear boxes, that were flat and had covers. I asked the person behind the counter what they do with them and he told me, after they unload the fish into the display, the boxes go to recycling. I'm all for recycling and asked him if he would consider giving some to quilters, to store finished blocks, patterns, tools, etc. He was more than happy to hand over 10 of them to me and said I could have as many as I wanted. These boxes made great craft boxes and after a round in the dishwasher, no fishy smell remained! The top of the boxes do have printing on them, but you could easily cover that with contact paper or a photo of the quilt block you're working on.

  3. I have a heck of time threading needles, so what I do is take about a 1/2 inch of thread and run it through a drop of Fray Check on my finger. It of course, stiffens the thread up, so it goes through the eye of the needle with no trouble at all! Makes it ever so much easier to get those needles threaded!

Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart customer service and was told that removing fabric "was a corporate decision and the decision is being reviewed." I was also told that voicing our concerns does make a difference! If having economical fabric available at Wal-Mart is important to you, there are things you can do.

Call 1-800-WAL-MART (1-800-925-6278). Take the time to go through their automated system and wait to speak to a real person. Let them know that fabric availability is important to you.

Write a letter. Let them know that you are not interested in supporting sewing machine sales unless fabric is available. Let them know you will not be stopping in their store if fabric is no longer offered.
