Our monthly workshop is Wednesday, September 12th
at the Enfield Senior Center, from 6:30 – 8pm.
We will meet Wednesday, September 19th, at HB Stowe School on Post Office Road,
doors open at 6:30pm and the meeting will begin at 7:00pm.
GHQG 1st Steering Committee Meeting:
If you would like to work at the BIG E at the GHQG table, there are openings
on September 14th and 15th for the 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. time slots. Free admission
and free parking. Contact Lisa Salonia (860) 667-3437 for the tickets.
Basting Lines would love to publish pictures so if there is anyone that has won
any ribbons, etc. at fairs or shows, please bring your pieces to our Guild meeting(s)
and we will take it from there.
There is an opening for a person to take over the Library books as Kimberly is
returning to Grad School. If interested, contact Kimberly Tynan at (860) 731-0850.
Mark your calendar for January 26 and 27 for our Spring Lecture/Classes. Changing
to January in hopes of getting a larger turnout as March/April had too many quilt
activities to compete with.
The New England Quilt Museum sent two free tickets to each Guild and we will be
entering them into the raffle on the 19th.

Letter from Lisa Salonia - President of Greater Hartford Quilt Guild

Hello Talented Quilters!
I am excited to begin my two year term as President and look forward to working
with you. I have been reading through various notebooks and I feel I have a good
understanding of how GHQG works. If you have any suggestions or concerns, please
know that you may attend our Executive Board meetings which are held on the first
Thursday of October, December, February and April or any Steering Rep. meeting on
the 1st Thursday of September, November, January, March and May at the Senior
Center in Newington at 7:00 p.m.
We have two exciting events happening. First our wonderful Stitches Through Time
Quilt Show. I hope to see many of you there and can't wait to see your beautiful
quilts. (f.y.i., Lisa won our Tea Basket in the raffle and was so thrilled with
ALL of the wonderful items) Speaking of the quilt show, a new chairperson is
needed. Diana Loeller and her team have done a wonderful job putting together a
great show for us and it is time to pass on the job. Diana will be happy to work
with you and give you whatever assistance you need. We need someone now to volunteer
as you need to start planning immediately for the 2009 quilt show. Our members are
very helpful and you will find we volunteer readily when we plan our events. Please
call me (860) 667-3437, lisasalonia@att.net
or Diana Loeller (860) 871-1878,
usewnstch@comcast.net for more info.
Then, on October 20, is our fabulous Annual Gathering which I will be able to attend
this year! Yeah! Quilters West has put together a wonderful program for us and their
enthusiasm is contagious. Please do register ahead of time. Planning for the day is
so much easier for them. Hope to see many of you there too!
Lisa

Walmart update: Eliminating fabric is not the only impact on the crafting world.
Yarns, beads, jewelry supplies and more are all being affected. Knowing that a
few stores are actually listening to the consumer, we can hope that our voices
will be heard. Even if you've called or written before... try again! Maybe they
will listen
- Call 1-800-WAL-MART(1-800-925-6278). Take the time to go through their automated system and wait to speak to a real person. Let them know that fabric availability is important to you.
- Write a letter. Let them know that you are not interested in supporting sewing machine sales unless fabric is available. Let them know you will not be stopping in their store if fabric is no longer offered.

Did You Know?
Here are some more color tips and a bit of terminology you might've heard,
but were not sure what they meant.
The color value, is the degree
of lightness or darkness a color has. If you add white, it would be called
a tint, but if you add black, it is then called a shade.
Monochromatic colors are all the tints and shades of a single color.
Achromatic means without color, therefore white, gray or black in appearance.
The depth of color refers to how close or far away a color feels. Warm colors always feel closer then cooler ones.
Bleeding colors are two colors next to each other on the color wheel. The blending will give the area a softer effect.
Contrasting color values occur when a light color is placed next to a dark one. This can make the light color appear bigger.
When someone mentions country colors, they are speaking about colors usually inspired by nature's hues. Warm browns, sunny yellow, tree green, sky blue and wildflower purple are a few of the colors.
Make a quilt with only pure primary and secondary color, no black or white mixed in, and you will have a very vibrant looking quilt.
Black and white are great colors for a base. Black will dim colors where white will brighten colors in most instances. They are also good to use for runners or sashing.
