The Next Meeting
Wednesday, December 15, is our annual holiday potluck
dinner and Yankee fabric swap. Bring a dish to share and
2 or 3 fat quarters and we will have a fun exchange.
Pull out those recipes, dust them off and whip up your
favorite take along food as our annual Holiday Pot Luck
Supper begins at 6:00 p.m. If you forgot to sign up, not
to worry. Anything you contribute will be greatly appreciated.
Workshop
Don't forget that our monthly workshop is Wednesday night,
Dec. 8, 7-9 pm at the Senior Center. Jean Hoagland will be
showing us how to cut fabric.
Local Fabric Stores
Because customers in the past abused the discount, Wrights is very strict and had us sign a Special Guild Discount agreement, which follows.
"The 15% discount will be available during regular business hours. The discount is for guild members only and cannot be used to purchase for friends and family. The discount will only be given when the cashier is shown a current guild card and picture identification. If the required identification is not presented at the time of the sale, the discount will not be given. Each time a member purchases they will be required to show identification."
Thou Shalt honor thy quilts by giving them only in love and not out of a sense of obligation.
Announcements
Betty Pearson is not feeling well.
It would be nice to send a little note of well wishes along with a (9½" unfinished) nine patch of floral's.
I will piece the top and Sally Cummings has offered too quilt it.
Any questions, please call Barbara Hull, 253-0484.
The EQ Community Project for Safe Homes in Enfield is moving ahead.
We are asking that everyone who wants to, please make a simple quilt top suitable for a child by January 12, our workshop night.
Also, please plan on working on the quilts (tying, sewing up opening, etc.) during our regular meeting night in March.
We still could use some more members willing to layer a few quilts at home.
If you need a copy of the directions, please see Cyndy Ostrout at the next meeting.
If you have questions about the quilt construction, please see Shirley Machesney.
Thanks so much for your participation!
The brother-in-law of one of our members, Diana Collins, was killed in Iraq on October 14.
Eric Minor leaves a wife and three young children in Brooklyn, CT.
We would like to make a quilt for the Minor family and invite anyone who wants to participate to make a block in red, white or blue fabrics.
The block can be of any pattern, and should measure 9.5" (9" finished).
Barbara Hull has agreed to sew the blocks together.
I know that "sewing a quilt with love and thanks" for Eric's service to his country would mean a lot to the family.
Thank you.
Looking for that special something for your Secret Pal, a friend, or even yourself?
Well, the Enfield Quilter Pin and the Greater Hartford Guild pin may be just the answer.
You can buy these beautiful pins for $5 a piece from Pat Hatcher, our treasurer, at our meetings.
Diane Derose is in charge of the basket our guild is responsible for annual meeting next year.
As she mentioned at the November meeting, our theme is Christmas! (entertaining with the family)
Diane is asking that each member donate a fat quarter with a Christmas theme.
She already has 4 plates, mugs and hot chocolate and is looking for any donations of a centerpiece, wine and glasses, candles and holders.
Many thanks to Jean Hoagland for offering to make a table runner.
Would anyone be interested in making coordinating napkins and placemats?
Donations are very welcome, but we would like to stay away from 'cutest' Santa items, and if members would like to donate with other members for any larger ticket items.
The baskets need to be finished for June, and Diane would like to have all donated items by the end of February.
Call her with any questions, 745-3123.
Tips and Hints
I read this in a lovely cookbook, I purchased at Thimbleworks, in East Longmeadow: Quilt For A Cure.
WHAT IS A FAT QUARTER?
A fat quarter refers to a cut of fabric that is equivalent to a ¼ yard of fabric (9" x 44"), but is cut from half of the fabric so it measures 18"x 22".
It's fatter. There are also fat eights, though not as common, which measures 9"x 22".
WHAT CAN YOU GET WITH A FAT QUARTER?
ONE FAT QUARTER WILL GIVE YOU:
| 99 - 2" squares |
50 - 2½" squares |
| 42 - 3" squares |
30 - 3½" squares |
| 20 - 4" squares |
16 - 4½" squares |
| 12 - 5" squares |

| 9 - 6" squares |

Quilt backs for the Safe Homes of Enfield Quilts.
I'm looking for help washing and ironing this material.
I'll bring it to the workshop next week and hopefully everyone will be willing to bring some home with them.
If someone wants to help with this and can't come to the workshop they can call 763-4106 or email me at danceswsissors@yahoo.com.
Thanks, Sally Cummings
